Dabigatran – New Drug for NEET PG Exam Preparation:

Today we are discussing about Dabigtran as part of of our High Yield NEET PG Exam preparation questions.

What is Dabigatran: Dabigtran is an oral anticoagulant similar to Warfarin in its efficacy but with some advantages.

Mechanism of Action: It is direct thrombin inhibitor and works by inhibiting both free and fibrin bound Thrombin.

It is considered as a reversible anticoagulant medication as its effect can be reversed by some drug. Idarucizumab is a drug which is specific inhibitor of Dabigtran and can reverse the effects of Dabigatran within minutes.

Indications of Dabigatran:

  1. To prevent stroke in patients with Atrial fibrillation
  2. DVT
  3. Pulmonary embolism

Contraindications of Dabigatran:

  1. Active bleeding in body
  2. History of serious hypersensitivity to Dabigatran
  3. Patients on mechanical prosthetic heart valves.

Side effects of Dabigatran:

1. GIT upset and GI bleeding

Dosage: 75mg, 110 mg and 150 mg.

Patients with Renal failure need dosage modification according to Creatinine clearance values.
