Empagliflozin- Newer Antidiabetic drug for NEET PG Exam preparation

What is Empagliflozin: It  is a recent newer Oral hypoglycemic drug of Gliflozin class. This drug was approved for treatment of diabetes in year 2014.

 Mechanism of Action: This drug is inhibitor of Sodium glucose c-transporter-2. SGLT-2 receptors are found in proximal convoluted tubules in the kidneys .About 90% of glucose is reabsorbed from kidneys through SGLT-2 receptors.So Sugar in the blood is excreted in urine .It has also been find to reduce the risk of CV events like heart failure and Myocardial ischemia.

Indications: It is indicated for treatment of Type 2 DM.

 

Dosage: It is given as single daily or twice daily dose of 10-25 mg/day in adults.

Side effects: similar to placebo, but there concerns of Empagliflozin increasing the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis in some patients.
